- Grace -

“No,” I yell, but before I can get any further, the three creatures turn into a blur of yellow and black.

Two seconds later, they’re all lifeless on the ground.

“Hmm,” Tzor says, hovering next to me, mandibles dripping blood and wings buzzing, making them invisible. “Didn’t see them until they were right next to you. Did they get you?” He comes closer and looks me up and down.

I get to my feet, heart beating fast from the encounter that suddenly turned violent. “I don’t think they wanted to get me. I think they were just curious.”

He sets down and his wings fold up. “Predators often are.”

I take in the creatures on the ground. “I’m not sure they were predators. See how fat they are? And those legs must be too short to be effective for hunting.”

“Perhaps,” Tzor says. “But it’s better to be on the safe side. Things are often not what they look like. It seems to me that on a game world, nothing should be trusted. Everything is set up to make us lose the game. I would not do that, Grace.”

I squat down and gingerly grab the skin of one dead creature, lifting the head. “It’s okay, they can’t hurt us. Probably not even when they were alive. These teeth are only for chewing leaves. Yeah, I agree. Better safe than sorry. But now we know.”

Tzor pulls a bunch of grass from the ground and wipes the blood off his mandibles. “They were too easy to kill. Yes, now we know.”

“If we had a knife, we could see if they have any meat on them.” I stand up and put one hand lightly on his forearm. “But thank you for protecting me. Even if they had been predators, they would have had no chance.”

“Probably true,” Tzor says and scans our surroundings. “Hopefully the game will let us get more familiar with this world before it sends more dangerous creatures after us. Come with me.” He grabs my hand and pulls me along over to the trees.

On the ground there’s a small heap of colorful fruits that Tzor has collected.

I pick one up. It’s the size of a peach and smells like a melon. “Nice. Should be nutritious.”

“Hopefully,” Tzor says. “Because those are all there are. The trees don’t bear as much fruit as I thought.”

I look up. Sure enough, there’s only green leaves up there. “Weird. From a distance, they looked like they were chock full of fruit. Oh, is that part of the game world? Can it change things like that and trick us?”

“I think this game world can,” Tzor says. “It’s the most advanced game I have heard of. I believe they are usually set, with challenges and traps that reset and are the same for each player. But here, the whole game is adjusting to us.”

I sniff and carefully bite into the fruit. “It’s pretty sweet. Probably not toxic. But if we’re going to stay here, we better find more of them. Or other things we can eat.
